AZTECH has facilitated over 50 roadmaps in a wide variety of fields, in the UK, mainland Europe, and South Africa. The process, developed by Dr Smith is fast and effective, and an improvement on slower, expensive, traditional methods procedures. He has been an advisor to the South African Government on roadmapping and strategy, and has facilitated roadmaps for the European Commission as part of the SMART Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). In addition, he has carried out roadmapping exercises for a number of UK Government-based establishments, as well as for industrial companies, ranging from major international companies to small, medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Dr Alan Smith has a great deal of experience in nanotechnology and is the author of numerous articles on different aspects of nanotechnology, and has lectured worldwide on the topic. Until recently, he was an Associate Director of the UK’s Micro Nano Technology Network, and a member of the Nanotechnology Industry Association (NIA). In 2009, Dr Smith has had publications on nanotechnology in the following sectors: consumer products, energy, food, water purification, healthcare, and textiles.
Dr Smith has a wealth of experience in managing projects. He has been Chairman of the COMIT Faraday Partnership (electronic displays), and Board Member of the IMPACT Faraday Partnership (colloids and formulation science). He was the Programme Director for the Manufacturing Molecules Initiative (MMI) for the DTI; and Programme Coordinator for a Foresight-LINK Award on nanoparticles, ACORN (2001-2004), which was recognised by the EPSRC as how future projects should be managed. He has been an author and a visiting tutor on Innovation and R&D Management for an MSc course at the University of Strathclyde.
Based on his experiences at Laporte, as a member of their acquisition team, and experiences subsequently with a number of companies, Dr Smith is able to help with confidential assessments relating to mergers and acquisitions.
